Abstract

This study aims to (1) identify the forms of slang in the Netflix series Breaking Bad according to the theory of Bloomfield (1933) and Guth (1961), (2) Describe the quality of slang translation in the subtitles of the Netflix series Breaking Bad. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, showing that there are 110 data types of slang words classified into 6 types. The data was dominated by Figurative expression with 40 data (36,3%), Interjection with 25 data (22,7%), Nickname with 24 data (21,8%), Shortened form with 12 data (10,9%), Abbreviation with 7 data (6,5%) and funny mispronunciation with 4 data (3,6%). The assessment of slang translation quality conducted according to the theory of Nababan, et al (2012) has an average of 2.72 with 85 data declared accurate, 2.7 with 86 data declared acceptable, and 2.75 with 85 data that has a high readability value. The result of the quality of slang translation in Breaking Bad subtitles from the three aspects as a whole is 2.71 which shows that the translation is accurate, acceptable, and has high readability but still needs improvement.
