Abstract

This study investigates the shifts in the meaning of idiomatic expressions found in the lyrics of Adele's Album 30 and evaluates the quality of their Indonesian translations on Musixmatch. The research aims to identify idiomatic expressions using Makkai’s (1972) classification, analyze the meaning shifts based on Nida and Taber's (1975) theory, and assess the translation quality using Nababan et. al. (2012) parameters for accuracy and readability. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, grounded in Spradley’s analytical model. The study identifies 57 idiomatic expressions, primarily Phrasal Verb Idioms, and finds that meaning shifts occur mainly through loss of information and skewing of information, with 81% of cases showing significant information loss. The translation quality, evaluated through focus group discussions with raters, resulted in average scores of 2.77 for accuracy and 2.84 for readability, indicating a generally accurate and understandable translation. These findings highlight the complexities of translating idiomatic expressions while preserving the original emotional and cultural nuances, underscoring the importance of careful translation practices to maintain meaning and impact across languages and cultural contexts. This research contributes to the field of translation studies by providing insights into the challenges of translating idiomatic language in music and the implications for cross-cultural communication.
